Astronomy, from the first skywatchers to the edge of the universe¶
Astronomy is the oldest science. Long before writing, people marked where the Sun rose on the longest day and counted the Moon's phases. Today the same questions are asked with telescopes in space. These books follow both stories: what the sky is, and how people all over the world came to know it.
Each book starts from what you can see with your own eyes and goes on, chapter by chapter, to the questions astronomers are still working on. Every idea comes with the reason we believe it, worked examples show each step, and every chapter ends with questions whose answers are folded underneath. The numbers come from NASA, ESA and the other observatories and missions that measured them.
